Aborting the Law

The prophecy has come true:
Under siege, but in denial so hungry we are
We are killing our children
We salt them and tear them limb from limb

Eating our children
We don’t weep for them
We greedily consume them
And burn

They are ripping open the pregnant women
They are dumping the infants in heaps in the alleys

Come with me
I will show you where they slaughter the children
Sacrificing them with salt
Throwing their bodies out with the trash
Hiding them
Denying their burial
Invalid!  They cry

Rachel is squatting here on her haunches, rocking
How to comfort her?

Once upon a time,
Israel sacrificed her children to Molech
Like the Canaanites
She sent her children into the fire for fertility
And horrified the Holy One with her purpose
And for this the Holy One intoned in cries too deep for words
Shall not His suffering invoke the Wrath?

We have no such purpose
We just salt them and tear them limb from limb
Because we don’t want them
