Eye Of God

    The Eyes of God                7/10/95

My God sees, she said,
And even though she had been cast away,
There remained for her a promise.

Flesh cannot stand against spirit,
And man’s strength cannot overrule God’s decision,
And for this I am grateful--because we are like brute beasts,
Pushing and shoving against one another for territory
Unable to detect the lines already drawn for us.

We are like people shouting at one another through a thick glass wall,
Who cannot lip read.
We are like mirrors, reflecting the image of what we see,
And our gaze is not fastened upon Thee.
There is some presence lurking here, so secretive, and so shadowy,
That he fools the mind with illusions and reflections,
And I have moved into his line of fire
And begun to query with him.

To you, my Lord, all things are visible.
Your eyes are a thousand times brighter than mine,
And to You all things are plain.
You, Lord, can see my anguish,
Although I cannot share it with flesh and blood.
You, Lord, can see the pain etched in my heart,
Although I have not words.
You, my Lord, and see my inner trembling,
My shaking resolve to face this foe
And if I perish, I perish.  My God sees, I say.

I am like a fool
With a sword in one hand
Weights in the other
And a blindfold on my face.
What kind of love is this?

You have said
All who call upon your name will be delivered
You have said
You came to set the captives free
Freedom for the prisoners
Sight for the blind
That the deaf may hear

It was only ever
Your living presence that drove the darkness back, my Lord,
And forced the demons to flee
And if ever we needed Thee
It is now.

The pure folly of God
(Wiser than man’s wisdom)
Is only matched
By the pure folly of one who commits his way
To that which he cannot see
(It is by faith, and not by sight)
