Silver and Gold Song

Silver and Gold                June 2004

And she said, “Where are your silver and your gold?
What have you accomplished with your time?
Where are the properties you hold?  Can you show the fruits of labors,
If I may be so bold?”

But I show uncertainties, having to serve
Frustrated purpose, as time goes by
A man I do not own
A life I do not run
A love I do not carry like an emblem
A love I neither plan nor put to games....

This is my silver and my gold
All that I’ve accomplished with my time
Properties within my heart to hold, I am held to trust to love
If I may be so bold

All is held in trust, all indeed
Where hand can’t enter, nor mold, nor rust
A hope I cannot see
A faith I can’t contain
A charity of life between the lines
A charity of life, silver and gold

Well I know of faith, I know of prayer
I know of time spent on my knees
Rather more than less as time gets rare, it is the challenge
For those who take the dare

If I stop now it seems like years
Fly by like leaves upon the breeze
Autumn leaves....
Trees give back their leaves,
And all the waters to the seas...
The living give their lives to their times
All that’s left is hearing of the words

Just what is love when it is older?
---Waiting on as days fly by
And days fly on like leaves of hammered gold I cannot hold, I cannot---
They fly and fall and die

And I show uncertainties, asking to see
What of the purpose that we crave...
A worth I cannot measure
A stone I cannot set
A soul that can’t be captured like an icon
A soul I neither judge nor put to shame

When I was young, life was so big and slow
I was small and eager for my part.
Now I’m older, slow of changes, I wait for fruit to show
Slow to trifle with the heart
Life is still much bigger than I can see
All veiled in mystery

--And what is that to thee?
If I have love
If I have love to carry me?
