In the Eternal 12/26/97
Life
It is so short
And we think we can grasp it
But nothing can hold it, whether it comes or whether it goes
So when I could see you
Did I think I had you?
And now you are gone
Do I think you slipped away?
Oh, how much trust is involved in love
How resolutely do I believe
In the face I cannot see
In the heart I cannot hold but with an open hand.
Love
It is so long
And we think we comprehend it
But nothing can contain it; no law can restrain it
When I could see you
Did I love you only then?
Now you are gone, has my love subsided?
Oh, how deep is love
How much faith is involved
And how resolutely do I love
The eyes mine wish to meet
The face I do not see
The heart I cannot hold but with out-stretched arms and upraised hands.
Life and Love
Together they become eternal
A given
Never to be stolen
Never to be sold, never broken
A given thing
It is in the eternal that we are requited
For I would be with Thee.
